Stirling, “the brooch of Scotland” is in a key strategic location, connecting the northern and southern parts of the country. It was said centuries ago “whoever holds Stirling holds Scotland”.

The city has a beautiful preserved cluster of medieval and Renaissance buildings in the Old Town, and high above the city is the imposing Stirling Castle, one of the most important in Scotland’s turbulent history and the home of Renaissance Scotland with its Stewart Kings and Queens.

The land of battles for Scotland’s Independence. And William Wallace, Braveheart, symbolizing the spirit of Scots, earning his place in history as a national hero.  And Robert the Bruce, the king who cemented Scottish independence.

A few miles from Stirling we enter the first National Park in Scotland, “Loch Lomond and the Trossachs”. Visit the places where Scottish Tourism began, and where the Lowlands meet the Highlands. The Trossachs deservedly known as “Scotland in miniature” is a wild dramatic landscape with many tranquil lochs, narrow glens, mountains, rich forests, and colorful flowers. It is the land that inspired many writers, painters, musicians and film directors.

Sir Walter Scott, the father of the historical-romantic novel, in his novel Rob Roy romanticizes the life of the bandit-hero that lived in this area. Scott set his best selling “Lady of the Lake” around Loch Katrine. Many well-known songs are based on this book. Schubert, wrote his Ave Maria to the words of this novel.

And Rossini’s opera “La donna del lago” is based on this book, as is Hail to the Chief. Many films and television series were based in the area, such as Braveheart, Rob Roy, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and more recently Outlander.
