The Highlands of Scotland is a distinctive area to the northwest of the country.

In a few days of touring you can get a sense of the rugged and charming scenery that gives the Scottish people and landscape its character.

Day 1

On the first day we “touch” four capitals. We leave from Edinburgh to the North, crossing the estuary of the river Forth, where you can admire three bridges, the oldest of which is a newly designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We drive through the “Ancient Kingdom of Fife” and then stop near Perth, one of the old capitals of Scotland, at Scone Palace where Scottish kings were crowned until the 17th century. We continue northwards crossing the Highland Boundary Fault and visit Dunkeld, “The fortress of the Celts”.  Its charming cathedral, was once the site of Scotland’s religious capital.

The changing scenery will guide us to Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, where we will spend the night.

Day 2

On the second day we head to the North West, to visit the area known as Wester Ross. Mountains, lochs, and beautiful beaches, gorges and waterfalls will delight you. We travel from East to West and back again to experience the true Highlands. Again we sleep in Inverness

Day 3

We begin day three in search of the most elusive Scottish resident, Nessie, in Loch Ness.

We cruise the Loch and visit the impressive ruins of Urquhart Castle. Continuing along the Great Glen by the Caledonian Canal, we pass Fort Augustus and Fort William, where, if we are lucky with the weather, we might see the tallest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis.

Travelling next to a sea loch, we arrive at the dramatic Glen Coe; beautiful and sad at the same time, it is also the backdrop for many films including Harry Potter and James Bond, amongst others.

Leaving the Highlands behind us, we reach the strategic and majestic Stirling Castle, high on a crag reminding us of a turbulent history and the fight for Scottish independence, the setting for national heroes William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.

We end our day back in Edinburgh.
